Week 2 New Grammar Playlist:
Art: Learned about mirror images and practiced drawing them using our OiLS.
Science: Completed two experiments to learn about Mirage and Distortion.
Mirage experiment- (#24 Van Cleave) we learned light travels in waves and reflects off of the surfaces it hits. Our brains take over and interpret what we think we see, but what is actually seen is reflected light! Sometimes light bends. When this happens we call that refraction. This happens when light moves from one material to another like air to water. In our experiment we witnessed a mirage when pouring water into a bowl with a penny in the middle. The penny didn’t move but it appeared to move after the water was poured in. This happens at sunrise and sunset as well! Just when the sun is below the visible point of the horizon, it’s long rays hit our atmosphere which is full of gases and water vapor. The thickness of those elements cause light from the sun to bend, refract and curve. This allows us to still see it!
Distortion Experiment: (#26 Van Cleave) Atmosphere can distort the shape of the sun because when light goes through our atmosphere, it bends and curves. A distortion happens, much like what we saw when placing a magnifying glass over the circle we drew. The distortion was the greatest at the edges of the magnifying glass because that is the place it was the thickest. The thickest part of our atmosphere is close to the ground. As the sun sets, the light reflected back to our eyes is the most refracted, so our eyes view the sun as flat or oval.
Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.”
